New Building Expansion/Renovation

Building expansion will keep up with
growing needs in the community

Groundbreaking on the project held May 10, 2009

Members and friends of the McCordsville United Methodist Church celebrated as ground was broken on the building expansion project on Mother's Day, May 10, 2009.

Previous to the groundbreaking, the church members unanimously took the recommendation of the building committee, chaired by Mike Edson, and decided to move forward with an expansion and renovation of McCordsville United Methodist Church during a vote after worship service on November 25, 2007.

The first phase is a $1.6 million dollar expansion that will more than double the existing size of the church providing a more welcoming and handicapped accessible design.  In the second phase, the existing sanctuary will be remodeled to resemble its original design when the current church was dedicated in 1922.  The 8,600 square foot addition to the existing building will feature the following:

  • new classrooms
  • a fellowship hall seating approximately 200 people
  • a commercial grade kitchen
  • an elevator for easier access to all levels of the buildings
  • new office space
  • handicapped accessible restrooms
  • a narthex area off the new main entrance area from McCord Street

The fellowship hall will allow the church and community to have a true “community gathering place” for church activities and various community functions.  The addition of the fellowship hall and other amenities also includes additional parking for our members and guests. The adopted design is adaptable to allow for additional expansion in the future.  If you have visited McCordsville United Methodist Church, you know how beautiful and what a prominent feature our stained glass windows are to the building.  An important issue for church members is maintaining the stained glass windows of the original structure. With the exception of one window, all of the stained glass windows will remain where they are presently located.

McCordsville United Methodist Church would like to thank Mike Edson and the members of the building committee for all their time and dedication to this project.  Additionally, we are blessed to have talented partners on our McCordsville United Methodist Church team: Jessica White of Jessica White & Associates for conducting a feasibility study and leading us into a capital campaign for this wonderful endeavor; Mike Halstead of HALSTEAD Architects who has a wealth of architectural experience with church buildings and an aptitude for honoring our church’s architectural past and blending it perfectly with our future addition to the church; and Fred Jones of CF Jones Group, our general contractor for the project.

Construction is expected to be completed by fall of 2009.  If you are interested in making a contribution to this project or have any questions regarding our exciting building plans for the future, you may contact Pastor John Myrland at  pastor@mccordsvilleumc.org.
